Monday’s Mommy Tips – Sleepy time routines

With all of Madeleine’s sleep troubles, I have been reading a lot about infant sleep. One thing I’ve read over and over again is that you should have a ‘standard’ sleepy time routine so that when it’s happening, it automatically triggers your child to start feeling sleepy.  That, and children thrive on routine.  For example, here’s ours:

Nap time:

  • Check/change diaper
  • Put Madeleine in her sleepy sack
  • Sit in the glider and either nurse her or give her her binky to suck on while rocking
  • When she’s drowsy, get up, kiss her on the forehead and tell her I love her
  • Then lay her in her crib
  • Turn out the light
  • Shut the door

For bed time, I am currently modifying the routine to add bath time, so it’ll look like this:

  • Check diaper
  • Give her a bath with the sleepy time bath soap
  • Put diaper back on
  • Give her a baby massage with her lotion
  • Get Madeleine dressed
  • Put Madeleine in her sleepy sack
  • Read her a bed time story
  • Sit in the glider and nurse her while rocking
  • When she’s drowsy, get up, kiss her on the forehead and tell her I love her
  • Then lay her in her crib
  • Turn out the light
  • Shut the door

So, there you have it. The particular routine you choose doesn’t matter, so long as it’s the same every time. 🙂 Now, I don’t know if it’s because of the routine or if it’s because of the sleep training we’ve been doing, but Madeleine has gone from taking 1-2 hours to get drowsy enough to put down to now taking no more than 15 minutes (if she is not due for a feeding). 🙂 If she’s due for a feeding, I have to keep waking her to get her to to finish eating, that’s how well this works!
